DIGITAL RENAISSANCE  San Francisco, CA   |   Workspace
This Y2000 dot com workspace, situated in an old factory building, is the San Francisco sales office for a Toronto-based technology company. To emphasize the building’s industrial aesthetic and avoid the usual boxy sheetrock and fluorescent lighting work environment, curved walls are used to define the perimeter, woven wire mesh is attached to the ceiling to conceal the insulation, ducts are left exposed, and plywood sheets are screwed to the floor. A slatted feature wall with backlit LED openings runs the depth of the space, linking the entry, an informal gathering space, and the conference room.

RED CROSS  San Francisco, CA   |   Boardroom and Retail Space
BPA+D designed a new retail outlet and updated several spaces for the Red Cross in downtown San Francisco, including improving an existing boardroom. The store gives the brand a visible presence on the street and is an outlet for emergency service products. In the boardroom, it was essential that the board be able to sit at a single, very long table, which required the table to be placed diagonally. BPA+D used design elements to make the angled placement of the table look intentional, exposing the building-scaled diagonal steel seismic braces and adding a bold light fixture fashioned from Unistrut and perforated stainless steel.

SIERRA CLUB  San Francisco, CA   |   Workspace
The Sierra Club Foundation, the financial arm of the Sierra Club, chose BPA+D to design new offices in downtown San Francisco. The design harkens back to a pre-industrialized image of California in its golden years, with board-and-batten details, warm cherry wood cabinetry, as well as interior single-paned divided windows. Although executed with a limited budget, this design provides needed spatial definition and structure for the organization's day-to-day operations.

ST. PAULS SCHOOL  Oakland, CA   |   Classrooms, Entry and Administration Offices
BPA+D has had an ongoing relationship with St. Paul’s School for many years, assisting with design updates and improvements to existing facilities. Revisions to the lower school entry create a distinctive first impression while embodying the school's ethos. Classroom renovations include improved natural and artificial lighting, as well as new furniture, finishes, cabinetry and storage facilities. New mechanical systems, to be implemented over a period of years, are a long-term investment to increase cooling and heating efficiency. The recent addition of new administrative offices required the interior demolition and reconstruction of part of an historic structure. BPA+D is also responsible for tracking and recommending code upgrades to improve the safety of students and teachers. Projects are tightly scheduled so that they are completed without interfering with the school calendar.

JULES THIN CRUST  Oakland, CA   |   Fast Casual Restaurant
Designed as a fast-casual restaurant prototype, this interior is intended for a series of thin-crust pizzerias. Comfort and efficiency are the hallmarks of the design. BPA+D worked closely with the client on all aspects of the project, including the graphic design, to insure that the various design elements work in a unified way to enhance the brand. Materials include raked and Venetian plaster, reclaimed wood, and ceramic tile by Heath.

ACH LAW OFFICES  Berkeley, CA   |   Workspace and Boardroom
This expansion of a law office into new facilities required planning partners offices, open cubicle and support areas as well as designing a reception area and conference space. Daylighting, materials and color are skillfully employed to create a distinctive and pleasant work environment.
