UNDERSTORY Palo Alto, CA

1understory.jpg

This new residence is framed by an immense legacy oak that hosts a continuous exchange of birds and small animals while providing passive cooling and dappled light for its new neighbor. A living and dining volume, featuring windows on three sides, and from above, offers a welcoming street-side gesture upon approach. This arm of the L-shaped plan, generously scaled, culminates in a skylight, relating in height to the adjacent tree understory; at night, the illuminated room becomes a lantern for exterior gatherings. At the rear of the site, a two-story volume stitches together the kitchen, laundry, and private quarters—including two children’s bedrooms, a study, a primary suite, and a compact in-law suite for multi-generational living—all while navigating the strict confines of the Palo Alto zoning code. Connecting these front and back volumes is a stair featuring a tall window, acting as a large-scale internal gesture in counterpoint to the more intimate components of the two-story wing. Sustainable measures are integrated throughout, including super-insulated walls, radiant barrier plywood, and hydronic concrete floors. Three adjacent gardens of varying scales provide versatile places to gather, dine, and play, shifting in character with the weather and the time of day.
