THREE VISTAS San Francisco Bay Area, CA

Perched high above the San Francisco Bay, an art lover wanted to edit, reduce, repair and revise a large home to make it more of a nest where one experiences both shelter and connection to the exterior. The three main living areas provide distinctly different relationships to nature: one up close, the other across a meadow leading to a long ridge, the third across the bay below and towards a distant panorama. The interventions to enhance each of these require particular responses. In the sitting room an enormous window is inserted to further reveal the formerly constricted view. In the case of the central courtyard, where a green ocean rages, cedar walls are added to warm up the space and provide scale. At the kitchen setting, the glass wall dissolves, pulling you outside. Art rambles around the walls and in every corner, with visual curios providing additional interest for the roaming eye.
